Material Spotlight: Curved Wood Flooring
Looking for an alternative to the common wood floor? We are excited by the unique beauty of Bolefloor's new curved solid wood floor. With joints that follow the natural profile of the tree it was cut from, the undulating curves provide a soft touch to an age old product. At home in both a traditional and modern home, this is another example of a material whose organic qualities transcend style.

Midwest Home: Mid-Century Classic
The June/July issue of Midwest Home, on newsstands and on the web now, features the renovation of an original 1963 Elizabeth Close house. The design updated the home to allow for the needs of a modern family while respecting the original architecture. A new spiral stair now leads from the living room to the terrace below without obstructing the facade. Inside, the kitchen's ceiling was vaulted and a wall removed to open the space to the dining room, reflecting the important role the kitchen now plays in family life. The project, completed while Lars Peterssen was a principal at Domain Architecture & Design, is another successful collaboration with interior designer Sally Wheaton Huscha.
NEW IDEA TRENDS: EAST ISLES RETREAT
East Isles Retreat is a highlight of the latest issue of New Idea Trends, on newsstands and on the web now! This wonderful collaboration with Coen+Partners Landscape Architects and ReuterWalton Construction was completed while Lars Peterssen was at Domain Architecture & Design. An unuseable and unwelcoming backyard has become the center of summer activity, directly connecting indoor spaces of the home to the new terraces and pool. A row of birch trees and an elegant white fence frame the view of the new pergola and stone wood-burning fireplace.
KITCHEN TRENDS: EDGEWATER MODERN
Edgewater Modern is featured on the cover of Kitchen Trends magazine! The issue is now on the newsstands and on the web. We also posted new photos from Kitchen Trends in our portfolio. For more information check out our website, follow Twin Cities Business magazine and the StarTribune, and keep up to date on developments through Surly’s blog.
Landscape Architecture Magazine: East Isles Retreat
The East Isles Retreat was featured in a recent issue of Landscape Architecture magazine. The article highlights Coen + Partners award-winning landscape design, which plays modern geometries and subtle textures off the historic details of the Lake of the Isles home. A new raised terrace maximizes views of the lake and creates a direct connection into the home. The pattern of bluestone pavers clearly delineates areas of activity: panels of lawn, the pool, and a pergola and fireplace for outdoor living space.
Tyrol Hills Modern
Happy New Year! We just updated the portfolio with our recently completed renovation of a 1980’s era home. We removed all the interior walls and ceilings—exposing the tall vaulted spaces hidden with the roof trusses—and used birch cabinetry to separate and define the living spaces. The use of unusual materials, including an undulating stone floor and custom mosaic backsplash, brings warmth and depth to the renovation’s “organic modern” design. Please check back for photos of the rest of the project!
EAST ISLES ARTS & CRAFTS TUDOR
We have just posted photos of a recent project designed by Lars Peterssen and Joseph Johnson while Lars was at Domain Architecture & Design! The original home, the work of Minneapolis architect Harry Wild Jones, lacked the combined kitchen, dining, and family room spaces which work well for modern family living. The beautifully proportioned addition, which opens to a new terrace and garden, was designed to blend seamlessly with the existing home on the exterior while providing a modern accent inside.

This exceptional project is another collaboration with interior designer Andrew Flesher.

Crocus Hill Residence
We just posted photos of another fabulous home designed by Gabriel Keller and Kristine Anderson (while at Domain Architecture & Design) with interior designer Martina Willegalle! This beautifully detailed Victorian offers up classic design with a twist. On the inside a few modern elements provide the moments of surprise and delight that give the home a distinct character, while on the exterior the addition blends seamlessly with the existing architecture.
Material Spotlight: CAST GLASS INTEGRATION
This unique fire-molded glass is a product of Minneapolis's own GlassArt Design. More than an inch thick, the glass is rich with depth and texture. The frozen motion of air pockets captured in the casting process is both familiar and unexpected. We are excited to be using it inset in a cedar shiplap door in one of our latest residential projects. Be sure to check out GlassArt Design and take a look at some of the other incredible products they are creating.
We are excited to announce the most recent addition to the P/K staff, Carl Olson! Explore the six page spread of luscious photos in the magazine (on newsstands now!), the article online, and our portfolio for additional photos!

The design features a fresh take on traditional shingle style architecture, with clean lines, crisp details and authentic natural materials. Look for construction to start this winter, and check out the plans and renderings in our portfolio.
Material Spotlight: Pyrolave Countertops
Searching for an alternative to stone countertops? Consider the unique look and feel of Pyrolave, a glazed Volvic lava stone from France. With delicate crazing across its surface and unlimited custom colors, it is the perfect addition to a traditional kitchen or a modern project looking for a more organic feel. We hope to have photos of it installed in projects in New York and Utah later this fall--in the meantime check out Pyrolave for more information!
Material Spotlight: Live-Edge Walnut
Inspired by the beauty of vintage furniture of George Nakashima, we are integrating live-edge walnut slabs into several designs. 12 foot long slabs of salvaged Claro walnut from Oregon that have gorgeous grain and undulating form create bartops, hearths, mantles and steps. Sourced from Goby Walnut & Western Hardwoods, the 4 inch slabs must be air dried for up to four years before they are kiln dried and ready to use. With its natural warmth and clean modern lines, the walnut slabs fit perfectly into our "organic modern" design philosophy.

Responding to research showing that the happiest people live near water, his home and new master suite were opened to Lake of the Isles. With sweeping views and cool breezes, the new 2nd floor porch provides moments of rest and connection with nature that are essential to a healthy lifestyle. Be sure to check out this great collaboration, including the ASID interior designers and Vujovich!

National SIPA Building Excellence Award
The LEED Platinum certified Kenilworth Bungalow was recently awarded a 2010 SIPA Building Excellence Award! SIPs panels, or Structural Insulated Panels, are high performance prefab building panels that were used as the walls and roof structure for the home. Constructed of rigid foam sandwiched between two layers of OSB, they are extremely energy efficient and cost effective. Associate Kristine Anderson has also designed a number of SIPs projects, including her own north woods cabin.
Southwest Journal: Inside the “Blue Zone” House
For a more in depth exploration of how designers integrated Dan Buettner’s Blue Zones philosophies into his home, check out the May 31st issue of the Southwest Journal. “One of the main elements of the redesign is to maximize the lake effect,” Buettner said, noting that “research shows that people who live near water are measurably happier than those that don’t.” A new master suite opening to a lakeside balcony, the redesigned front porch, and the 3rd floor “destination room” all provide the views and connection to Lake of the Isles that Dan desired. The home is open to the public through June 13th, so there is still time to experience it for yourself!
STAR TRIBUNE: ASID SHOWCASE HOMES
Both ASID Showcase Homes are featured in the May 19th issue of the Star Tribune! The cover spread in the Home+Garden section highlights the unique collaboration between the homeowner (Dan Buettner) and the designers to integrate Dan’s Blue Zones principles into the design. Also, don’t miss the article on the Edgewater condo, or the online slideshow of both projects!

AIA Minnesota: LEED Platinum Home
AIA Minnesota magazine’s May/June “Sustainability & Style” issue features the Craftsman-inspired LEED Platinum Kenilworth Bungalow home. The editor writes, it “may come as a surprise to those who think all green design is decidedly contemporary... the LEED-Platinum Kenilworth Bungalow debunks that stereotype by melding an early-20th-century housing style with 21st-century green construction.” The home also features a sustainable landscape by Brubaker Landscape Designs.
Linden Hills Cottage
Looking for a refreshing departure from oversized homes? Check out the Linden Hills Cottage, the latest addition to our portfolio. Designed by Lars Peterssen & Gabriel Keller with Domain Architecture & Design and built by SilverMark, the design was inspired by the home’s roots as a summer house near Lake Calhoun. Simple details and human scaled proportions make it the perfect addition to the neighborhood!
Interested in a cost conscious modern home or cabin? Check out two seaside projects that we just added to our portfolio, designed by Gabriel Keller with CAN resources. Both the Long Island Retreat, and the more modestly sized Seaside Modern cabin, feature living spaces designed to maximize stunning panoramic views of the ocean. A limited, natural palette of materials compliments the surrounding landscape. Both cabins could be customized to suit your lakeside or northwoods property!
We are excited to show you the first glimpse of the latest custom condo at the Edgewater. Gabriel Keller, Lars Peterssen and Kristine Anderson (while at Domain Architecture & Design) worked with Wheaton Hushcha Design and Streeter to create a home of stunning quality. Clean modern lines contrast with the rich texture of reclaimed oak floors and live-edge walnut slabs. (Special thanks to Alecia Stevens for her photos)
Another new home new homes was just featured in the Star Tribune, and is now LEED Platinum certified! The bungalow was beautifully detailed and designed to fit the scale and quality of Lake of the Isles homes. Lars, who completed the project while principal of Domain, collaborated closely with Brubaker Landscape Designs and ReuterWalton Construction to seamlessly integrate cutting edge green features into a traditional craftsman bungalow. Check out the article here!
A fantastic project designed by Lars Peterssen and Kristine Anderson (while at Domain Architecture & Design) was recently featured in Mpls.St.Paul Magazine! Their design transformed an outdated 70’s house and opened up the home to the surrounding woodlands. Working with Engler Skogmo, the design melded the client’s traditional tastes with a more modern aesthetic to create a beautiful transitional home.
THE 2010 ASID SHOWCASE HOMES
Peterssen/Keller is thrilled to announce that we are sponsoring BOTH of this year's two Showcase homes. For the first residence on the tour, renovated several years ago by Lars Peterssen, a new master suite with a rooftop balcony overlooking Lake of the Isles was added. The second home, is a stunning luxury condominium in the Edgewater on Lake Calhoun. We'll keep you posted — both homes will open in May.
OUR NEW SPACE
We are excited to announce that Peterssen/Keller Architecture has officially moved into our new space, located in the heart of Uptown! We gutted three narrow storefronts to create our spacious new office. We combined original terrazzo floors with polycarbonate panels and homosote walls to create a design that is fresh and original. Stop by and visit when you’re in the neighborhood!
Material Spotlight: GRAIN-SCULPTED WOOD
Kristine Anderson recently got an impromptu tour of Old Globe Reclaimed Wood Company in Superior, Wisconsin. The company is carefully harvesting wood from the Globe Elevators, built in 1897 on the Duluth-Superior Harbor. They have wonderful old-growth Eastern White Pine columns, beams and "pancake" walls. Over many years, the pancake walls were smoothly carved by the tons of grain running over their surfaces. We used this amazing material in our new office to create a stunning wall in our front entry!
Material Spotlight: EXCEPTIONAL TEXTURE
Always on the lookout for extraordinary materials and textures, Gabriel Keller discovered this new cast-concrete tile from designer Andy Fleishman. Rich in pattern and detail, the tile forms a modern tapestry on the wall of the Edgewater Transitional loft. Find this great tile and more at Ann Sacks!
Material Spotlight: NEW USE FOR A HISTORIC MATERIAL
One of our clients recently purchased a pallet of this Minton tile, which, because of its beauty and durability, was often used for floors of important buildings like the U.S. Capitol. Minton was the premier manufacturer of encaustic tile, produced by inlaying layers of different colored clays directly into the tile. The tiles' next home will be on the wall of a kitchen we are designing for a Hudson River estate north of New York City.
For a fabulous and affordable new encaustic tile, we recently used tile from Villa Lagoon in the sunroom of our Fremont Georgian project.
